The hard, calcareous skeleton of the fire corals appears relatively smooth. However, the surface is covered with hair-like polyps extending through pinhole-sized pores. There are two types of polyps: sensory/stinging and feeding polyps. The feeding polyps are stout and encircled by five to nine, tall, thin sensory/stinging polyps.
