Phylum Rhodophyta

A group of largely multicellular, structurally complex photosynthetic organisms. The red color is due to water-soluble phycobilin pigments. The storage carbohydrate is floridean starch, resembling amylopectin.

The following taxa of this phylum occur in the region:

Galaxaura spp. (Tubular thicket algae)
Jania spp. (Segmented algae)
Laurencia papillosa
Laurencia poitei
Lithothamnion spp. (Crustose coralline algae)
Peyssonnelia rubra (Burgundy crust alga)
Porolithon pachydermum (Reef cement)
Wrangelia penicillata (Pink bush alga)
