Lemon shark
Negaprion brevirostris
(Poey, 1868)
Description:
A brownish shark with yellow overtones but no conspicuous markings. Snout short, blunt and rounded. Large second dorsal fin nearly the same size as the first one. Upper lobe of tail much larger than the lower lobe.
Size up to 3.4 m.
Habitat:
Occurs on continental and insular shelves, but may enter fresh water. May occur single or in small groups. Feeds mainly on fish, but also takes crustaceans and mollusks. Depth range: 0 - 92 m.
Distribution:
Occasional Florida and continental waters to northern South America; uncommon to rare Bahamas and Caribbean islands.
