Description:
Fish with an elongated, cylindrical, body and a notched tail. Body with five or six horizontal yellow stripes over a bluish silver to silvery-white background. Fish have pale phases. Mouth noticeably smaller than in other grunts. Fins yellow.
Size up to 23 cm.
Habitat:
Prefer shallow reefs, down to 25 meters. Drift in small schools near the bottom, in the shelter of coral formations.
Distribution:
Common Florida, occasional Bahamas and Caribbean; also south to Brazil.
