Description:
This species forms single plane candelabrum-shaped colonies which, with greater size, have a tendency to become bushy. Large colonies measure 60 cm in height. The branches are stiff, stout, 10-15 mm in diameter, and sometimes reunite with one another. The apertures have strongly projecting, upturned lower lips, which can be very prominent particularly at the branch tips.
Color:
Dark gray or blackish brown when dried.
Habitat:
It is common where there are strong currents on the outer reef, down to 30 m.
Distribution:
Very widespread, Bermuda, Florida, Bahamas and Caribbean.
