Description:
This urchin cannot be confused with any other in the region. The primary spines are large, but not pointed. The color of the body is light to reddish-brown; the primary spines usually light brown, striped with darker brown, or even marbled with white. Often tinged with green or red. The large spines are often encrusted with algae, bryozoans or even sponges.
Size: Body up to 6 cm. Spines up to 6 cm.
Habitat:
Often found on reefs and rubble areas. It can be found hidden and wedged inside small recesses. In that case, the large spines give it away.
Depth: ranges from 3 m down to 25 m.
Distribution:
Common to uncommon all over the Caribbean.
